We turned a chapter in the book of Matthew last night. Chapter six continues the “greatest sermon ever preached” by addressing the issue of prayer (versus 1, 5-8). And just as Matthew has been calling out the religious elites’ practice of religion, He continue to call them out for public performance and the applause of people.
Our big idea last night was this: Prayer is about knowing the LORD and being known by Him, and it is NOT about being noticed by people!
I’m looking forward to diving into the LORD’s PRAYER the next couple of weeks as we learn what Jesus has to say about praying.
Questions to ask at the table or when you’re driving in the car:
- What are modern versions of “praying on street corners”?
- Verse 8 says God already knows what we need. So why pray?
- Which is harder for you (praying out loud in a group OR praying alone with no one watching) and why?
ACTION STEPS:
Four to seven days this week…
-Set a 2–3 minute timer (maybe add 1 minute each day)
-Pray alone
-No phone scrolling, no music, no posting
-just honest conversation with God
